Stratford Professional Fire Fighters Burn
Foundation
Stratford Firefighters of Local 998 of the International Association of Firefighters began their long relationship with the Connecticut Burns Care Foundations Children’s Burn Camp in 1993. Back then we ran a very successful golf outing for the C.B.C.F and this camp.
In 1999, a group of firefighters wanted to do more for the Stratford community while keeping our relationship with this camp. Thus the Stratford Professional Firefighters Association was formed. In 2003, our name changed to the Stratford Professional Firefighters Burn Foundation.
This foundation’s mission is the prevention of fires and burn related injuries. This is accomplished by running various fundraising activities, such as our golf outing, annual dance, firefighters parade and this fishing tournament to name a few. A profit from every one of our events goes to support five main areas of support.
- Scholarship Program: Since 1999, a total of $3,500.00 been awarded for two scholarships for one Bunnell and Stratford High School student, who will continue their education in an accredited college and major in the public safety sector.
- Education Fund: Members of this foundation attend seminars and conferences related to burn and fire education. Grants are provided to cover part of the cost of attending.
- Fire Prevention and Education: Members of this foundation work closely with the Stratford Fire Marshals Office, working with the young children of Stratford, teaching them the dangers of fire. Grants are provided to this office for the purchase of fire prevention materials that are given to the schools for distribution. Each October, this foundation holds a Fire Prevention Fair for the community.
- Bridgeport Hospital Burn Center: We currently are in the planning stages of funding and building a suite and waiting room, for State of CT Firefighters who are burned and require long term care. Families will be able to stay in this suite instead of staying in a hotel. This suite will also be made available to the community at large when no firefighter is being treated.
- Children’s Burn Camp: We continue our support of this Camp. Since our involvement began we have raised over $200,000.00. This camp provides a one week camping experience for young burn survivors, who can enjoy activities such as swimming, boating, hiking, a premier ropes course to name a few. This foundation has funded portable radios, swimming docks, a much needed shower facility and much needed equipment and storage buildings to name a few projects we have been directly involved in. Every child attends free of charge. Firefighters representing every state in New England, New York, New Jersey, Maryland and the District of Columbia attend. Nurses, Physical and Occupational Therapists attend from leading burn centers along the east coast. All attend volunteer their time.
No member of the Stratford Professional Firefighters Burn Foundation, Board Members or Officers receives any pay for our work. We are a non profit organization. Please support this fundraising effort and help us continue our vital work with the community of Stratford, Bridgeport Hospital Burn Center and the young burn survivors of the Connecticut Burns Care Foundations Children’s Burn Camp.
