Letter to Connecticut Post

Sincere thank you to town firefighters
Article Last Updated: 06/27/2007 09:11:15 PM EDT

My family and I would like to take this opportunity to commend the firefighters of Stratford's Main Street firehouse for their kind and generous response on June 16. My daughter had come home to convalesce after delicate spinal fusion surgery performed just 36 hours earlier. Unfortunately, my daughter was unable to climb the steps into our home because of her pain.

Within mere minutes of our 911 call, four Stratford firefighters arrived. Without hesitation, all four gallant men took control of the situation and assured my daughter that they would facilitate her entry with as little pain as possible.

With great compassion, each of these four gentlemen put my daughter at ease, making quick work of getting her safely tucked away in bed for a well-deserved rest. They provided further "dis-stress" by telling us not to hesitate to call should further assistance be required.

From this incident, we are reminded of the pride, dedication and compassion of Stratford's firefighters. It is comforting to know they are just a phone call away.

In last week’s issue of the Stratford Star a town resident wrote to the

editor sharing how displeased she was about how the Stratford Fire

Department received and spent grant money. In that letter, there were

many inaccuracies and the purpose of this letter is to correct those

inaccuracies. The Stratford Fire Department has applied for many different

grants from the federal government in the last few years. These grants

have included specialized rescue equipment and training for town

firefighters. In three consecutive years we have been denied grant money

for these programs from the federal government. In this current year the

department applied for two different grants, one of which was for health

and fitness equipment. The federal government saw fit to approve only one

grant for this fiscal year. This grant specifically states that 10% of the

money must be provided for the funds to be awarded. This figure would be

roughly $10,000 dollars, of which the Stratford Firefighters paid half o the

amount out of ourown pockets. The cost to the town was the additional

$5,000.

This misinformed letter also stated that it would be cheaper for the town

to purchase gym memberships for the entire department. The Stratford

Fire Department has a nearly 100 person force. At most health clubs in

town the discounted rate is approximately $50.00 a month. That would be

a total cost of $60,000 dollars for one year.

We as firefighters do not expect for the public to understand the grant

process in which we have to go through to obtain federal money. The

Firefighters of Stratford would like nothing more than to receive copious

federal funds for firefighting equipment, training and man power.

Unfortunately, the system does not work that way and all departments are

forced to take what is given to them. This grant should be viewed as a

positive situation for the department and its members. We respect the

opinions of our town’s citizens, but ask that those opinions be voiced for all

to read only when they are based on fact and not assumptions.

Sincerely,

Executive Board of IAFF Local 998 Firefighters of Stratford
